CHAPTER 14
SILAS
Iâd prove it to Amity.
Iâd said those words and I meant them. Iâd prove to her that nothing about my life was going to stand in the way of having her. She was more important than all of that put together. Even if the truth about her brotherâs accident wouldâve likely ruined it all. There was no reason to think sheâd ever find out.
Her father had promised me when it had happened that he wouldnât tell her. Iâd thought he wouldâve hated me and put the blame on me, but he hadnât. And heâd never told her that the accident had been my fault. If she ever found out, it would mean Iâd never have her in my life again.
It had broken my fucking heart watching her grieve her brother knowing that if not for me, he wouldâve still been alive. That was part of the reason I pushed myself so hard in the game.
I was playing for both of us.
It didnât matter if itâd been seven years.
Amity looked up at me with those big, gray eyes. Iâd never seen eyes quite the color of hers and couldnât remember if her mom had that color. Her dad sure as hell didnât. He had brown eyes that could shoot the worst death stares if you were a member of his team not doing what he should have been doing.
Hers were fucking beautiful.
âIâm going to go to bed,â she said quietly. âDo youâ¦?â She looked away and wet her lips as if what she was going to ask were hard for her. âDo you want to sleep in the bedroom with me or on the couch?â
How this woman didnât already know the answer to that question, I had no idea. The only thing that would keep me from her bed was her.
âWith you,â I told her, then I leaned in to kiss her again. Fuck. I really wished she hadnât had an accident tonight. For many reasons, but wanting her more than Iâd ever wanted anyone was at the top of the list. Right after her not being hurt. I moved away from her and grabbed her bowl. âYou go ahead. Iâll clean this up.â Though she hadnât eaten much of her snack. If she got hungry later, Iâd get her one. âIâll just be a minute.â
She nodded then headed toward what I assumed was the bedroom. I hadnât been here before, but it was the only place that led to another room.
After grabbing her bowl, I stacked it with mine and went to the sink intending to empty them and rinse the bowls. But when she pulled her shirt over her head before she got into the bedroom, I knew that I wasnât going to be rinsing anything and wondered if this was part of her convincing me, as sheâd said earlier she intended to do.
Instead, I left the bowls, locked the door, and turned off all the lights on my way to her bedroom. Iâd have to go by home in the morning to change and shower and brush my teeth.
